Research at HIS focuses on humanoid robots, medical informatics, interactive learning and cognitive automobiles. The spectrum ranges from computer assisted sensor analysis and fusion to interpretation of the data for cognitive assistance systems. Applications are in the area of human-machine interaction, humanoid robotics and medical assistance systems.

First International Workshop on Cognitive Robotics in Surgery

From 26th to 28th January 2012 the First International Workshop on Cognitive Robotics in Surgery takes place in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, Germany. The workshop is held within the International Advanced Robotics Programme (IARP) to review and discuss research challenges and critical issues in cognitive robotics for surgery. Download Program

DGR-Tage 2011

ARMAR-III in IEEE Spectrum

The current release of the IEEE Spectrum online magazine features in its article "A Robot's Body of Knowledge" a report about the PACO-Plus project and the humanoid robot ARMAR-III.

Best Paper Award

Darko Katic received the Best Paper Award for his contribution "Knowledge-based Situation Modeling and Interpretation for Context-aware Augmented Reality in Dental Implant Surgery" at MIAR 2010.

Inauguration of KIT-Focus Anthropomatics and Robotics

The major objective of the KIT-Focus is to design, implement and evaluate highly usable and accepted anthropomatic systems to improve human’s quality of life.

The research topics emphasize the critical path of understanding the symbiosis between humans and machines and the development of new methodologies and cutting-edge technologies for creating artificial systems with cognitive capabilities and natural interaction modalities.

The Inauguration of the KIT-Focus Anthropomatics and Robotics will take place on November, 30th 2010 at 10.00 h at Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation.


KI 2010

Lead by HIS, the institute for Anthropomatics organizes the 33rd German Conference on Artificial Intelligence, KI 2010. The conference will take place on 21st - 24th September, with a varied program scientific talks and workshops.

HIS in invasic

HIS is one of the KIT research groups involved in the new Tansregio 89 "Invasive Computing". HIS investigate the implementation of a cognitive robot control architecture with its different processing hierarchies using the invasive hardware technologies, language and architectural methodologies. The goal is to explore techniques of self-organisation to efficiently use available resources for the timely varying requirements of robotic applications.


The collaborative research center on humanoid robots (SFB 588) presented the latest achievements toward the implementation of complete humanoid robot systems at the International Trade Fair for Automation and Mechatronics, 8-11 June 2010 in Munich. The humanoid robot ARMAR-III demonstrated the capabilities of grasping and manipulating daily objects, opening doors as well as the natural interaction with the user.
